A full assessment of the ocular surface through a combination of tests for dry eye diagnosis, from tear break up time to the tear volume production test.
The Ocular Surface – Tear film integrated functional unit
Tear homeostasis is achieve reflexly by the lacrimal functional unit (LFU), which consists of the ocular surface, its secretory appendages and the connecting innervation. The trigeminal innervation of the ocular surface epithelia provides the afferent limb of the feedback loop. The parasympathetic secretomotor innervation of the lacrimal glands, meibomian glands and conjunctival goblet cells provides the efferent limb of this loop.
